“Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I will remember. Involve me, and I will understand forever.” – Confucius
At the Amish Experience, students encounter, in a meaningful and memorable way, a culture different from their own without having to visit another country. The Amish are real people, frequently misrepresented in the mainstream media. Their lifestyle choices present challenges that take on an immediacy impossible to capture in a book or museum. What better stepping stone for discussions about freedom, tolerance, and respect for our differences! (Open rear-round for groups with prior reservations.)
The Special Effects Theater brings Amish history to life through the eyes of an Amish family with children the ages of many of your students, as teenaged Jacob struggles with family, tradition, and the allure of the modern world.
House & Schoolroom
Students sit at the desks in our one-room school, and later learn about life without electricity, Plain clothing, and Amish customs on their tour of Lancaster’s only designated Amish Heritage Site House Tour.
Our Farmlands Tour step-on guide transforms your bus into a mobile classroom, traveling backroads, observing the Amish at work and play, commenting upon a culture whose customs and traditions continue to withstand the test of time.
Underground Railroad Experience
The struggle for freedom on the Underground Railroad has never been presented in such an unusual and memorable way. Combining live actors with a guided step-on tour, we tell the story from the very beginnings of slavery in the United States to the Civil War, and introduce some of the key historical players…as it would have been experienced at the time!
